“Reaching Out” Photo Comparison

For my blog post this week, I wanted to find a photo with some similarities to the “Reaching Out” photo that I’ve been researching. It took a lot longer than I expected to find a photo that fit what I was looking for. I wanted the photo to be from either the war in Iraq or the war in Afghanistan. I also wanted the photo to be famous, or to have at least been published in a relatively famous news source of some kind. I came across this photo in a New York Times magazine article. The article was about the death toll of American forces in Afghanistan reaching 2000. The article was published on August 22, 2012 and contains a story about the 1990th American soldier to die. The article also has several statistics that point out the significant increase in casualties since Obama heightened the war effort in Afghanistan by sending an additional 33,000 troops. The Two soldiers pictured in the article are named, Cpl. Andrew Smith (bottom) and Sgt. Jaime Adame. They were not mentioned in the story of the article, and fortunately they have survived the war so far.

The first similarity between the two photos that I noticed is that both of them show a lot of fear and pain in the faces of the soldiers. It is also very obvious in both photos that there are serious wounds inflicted. I also notice a lot of camaraderie. In both photos there is what I would call “brothers in battle” message, which can be seen in the way Sgt. Adame is supporting the weight of Cpl. Smith in one hand and using his other hand, covered in blood, to wipe his face. The context that these photos were published in is also very similar because the American people are tired of war at both of these points in history. You can especially tell that the New York Times article is appealing to the sympathy of its readers because the entire article is about a milestone number in the death toll, which isn’t much of a rally cry to the American people.
